Dallas wings pick up diamond deshields in four-team

trade

SOURCE: THE ATHLETIC

The Dallas Wings dealt Marina Mabrey to the Chicago Sky as part of a four-team trade that also involves the Phoenix Mercury and New York Liberty. In the move, the Wings pick up WNBA All-Star and 2022 WNBA Champion, Diamond DeShields, along with multiple first-round draft selections.

DeShields, a versatile guard-forward, who was the third overall pick in the 2018 WNBA draft, had spent the last season with the Phoenix Mercury, averaging nearly 14 points and four rebounds per game. But in a surprise move, the Mercury agreed to trade her to Dallas in a four-team exchange for a package of future draft picks.

The move was seen as a major coup for the Wings, who had been looking to add another high-scoring weapon to their already potent offense. With DeShields in the mix, the Wings now boast one of the most talented and dynamic offenses in the league, with DeShields joining forces with Arike Ogunbowale and Natasha Howard.

“Diamond DeShields has established herself as one of the premier wing players in the WNBA,” Dallas Wings President and CEO Greg Bibb said (via WFAA). “Her size, athleticism, ability to get to the rim and defensive acumen will make us a better basketball team.”

"I'm going to come out here and do everything I can as I got this 'Dallas' across my chest," DeShields said (via WFAA). "I've got a lot of respect for the team and the organization, and I can't wait to get to work with my new teammates."

All eyes remain on the Wings, and on DeShields, as they gear up for the start of the 2023 WNBA season. With a talented roster and high expectations, the Wings are hoping that the addition of DeShields will be just what they need to make a run at the championship.
